How to analyze a film step by step: a film analysis guide

Analyzing a film means breaking it down methodically to understand how it is made and what it means. This guide summarizes the eleven steps of film analysis, from the first data point to the final rating.

Film analysis is not stating whether you “liked” a movie. It is a structured study that examines the work in its narrative, dramatic, audiovisual and symbolic dimensions to deliver a grounded judgment, proper to film criticism.

The method in this guide is based on the Cinematography course text by M.Sc. Ramón Fernández Reyes and organizes the analysis into eleven steps. You can work through them by hand or use the interactive studio, which builds the worksheet for you and then lets you refine it.

The eleven steps of film analysis

   Gather the base data and the synopsis

   Identify the work, its authorship and a precise summary with beginning, development and end.

   Define characters and superobjectives

   Distinguish primary, secondary and tertiary forces, and each character’s maximum desire.

   Locate the conflict and point of view

   Find the central struggle between what the protagonist wants and what stands in the way.

   Classify the antagonistic forces

   Place the human, non-human and internal oppositions to the protagonist.

   Extract the premise and underlying context

   Sum up the message in one sentence and detect the hidden ideas beneath the story.

   Recognize the narrative structure

   Determine whether the story is linear, time-jumping, parallel or choral, and assess its continuity.

   Analyze expectation, intrigue and temperature

   Observe how the film manages suspense, mystery and surprise up to the climax.

   Separate thematic and motivational axes

   Distinguish the events that move the plot from the elements that create atmosphere.

   Study editing and transitions

   Examine how time, space and rhythm are arranged, and how one scene passes to the next.

    Interpret the symbolism

    Read signs, symbols and archetypes to uncover deeper meanings.

    Form the global interpretation and rate it

    Bring it all together into a final judgment and assign a rating from 7 to 1.
