Underlying context
Underlying context is the hidden messaging beneath the story: political, social, religious or commercial ideas tied to the era in which the film was made.
Every film is about more than its plot. Beneath the surface circulate ideas about power, social class, faith, consumption or the morality of its time. Detecting that underlying context means reading the work as a cultural document.
Asking what a film is really about — without it saying so explicitly — reveals its critical or ideological dimension and enriches any serious film analysis.
